We're just a step away from the Oscars, the closing act of Hollywood's annual party for itself. But first, actors will reward themselves with even more trophies at the 30th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Truth be told, this weekend's show is likely to come loaded with extra sentiment for its card-carrying union members, many of whom hit the picket lines during last year's industry-threatening 118-day standoff with producers. The strike ended with concessions made in compensation, benefits and AI image protections.
The belle of the SAG ball is EGOT winner (and recent mammoth memoir author) Barbra Streisand, who will receive SAG's lifetime achievement award for her work in front of and behind the camera.
Like the Golden Globes, SAG Awards are doled out to both movie and TV actors − in this case by their peers. Of course, the real reason to tune in is to help you handicap your Oscar picks: SAG wins are often solid predictors of who will take home Academy Award accolades, given the overlap in the two groups' voters.
Here's all you need to know about this year's SAG Awards:
Where can I watch the 2024 SAG Awards?
After airing for a quarter-century on TBS and TNT, the Screen Actors Guild Awards, which take place Saturday, Feb. 24, have again found a home at Netflix, where they'll stream at 8 p.m. EST/5 PST.
The two-hour live show will emanate from the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall, a historic Los Angeles venue that has also been home to the Oscars in years past. That's a notable step up from last year's show, which took place at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel.
Where can I watch the SAG Awards red carpet pre-show?
"Queer Eye" star Tan France and pioneering fashion editor Elaine Welteroth will host the SAG pre-show with an emphasis on critiquing the various fashion statements (or faux pas) that make their way down the red carpet. The pre-show will stream live on Netflix, YouTube, and TikTok at 7 p.m. EST/4 PST.
France and Welteroth will team up to interview nominees, highlighting the best fashion looks of the night and giving viewers a look at the star-studded arrivals. Also, in a rarity, look for stunt performers to get their moment in the sun: During the pre-show, winners for best stunt ensemble performances in movies and TV will be revealed.
Who is hosting the SAG Awards in 2024?
No host has been announced for the awards, which have been host-free since 2021.
What award is Barbra Streisand getting at the 2024 SAG Awards?
Few stars are really legends in their own time, but no one can deny Barbra Streisand is just that. Her industry friends are awarding her SAG's lifetime achievement award for both her career and humanitarian laurels. "She is a colossal icon with a relentless work ethic, evolving with each stage of her remarkable journey," said SAG-AFTRA president and actress Fran Drescher.
Streisand has worked in nearly every conceivable medium, from stage to screen (large and small), in the studio and behind the camera. Among her honors are two Academy Awards, eight Grammys (plus the Grammy Legend and lifetime achievement awards), five Emmy Awards and a Tony Award.
Want to know more about her? Last year's big book release, "My Name Is Barbra," is 970 pages of Streisand telling you her life story. Consider the audiobook; it's read by Streisand herself.
Who are the 2024 SAG Award nominees?
This year's SAG nominees are largely familiar names and faces, if you've paid attention to recent award shows such as the Golden Globes, where "Oppenheimer" outpaced "Barbie."
SAG nominees for outstanding ensemble cast include Oscar best picture nominees "American Fiction," "Barbie," "Killers of the Flower Moon" and "Oppenheimer," plus "The Color Purple." Best male performance will see if Cillian Murphy ("Oppenheimer") or Paul Giamatti ("The Holdovers") can steal the statue, with Bradley Cooper ("Maestro"), Colman Domingo ("Rustin") and Jeffrey Wright ("American Fiction") rounding out the pack.
Among the women, Oscar nominee Annette Bening ("Nyad") is up against Barbie herself, Margot Robbie, as well as Emma Stone ("Poor Things"), Carey Mulligan ("Maestro") and Golden Globe winner Lily Gladstone ("Killers of the Fower Moon").
In best supporting actor, look for Globe winner Robert Downey Jr. ("Oppenheimer") to duke it out with Robert De Niro ("Killers of the Flower Moon"), Sterling K. Brown ("American Fiction"), Willem Dafoe ("Poor Things") and Ryan Gosling ("Barbie"). Among the women, Globe winner Da'Vine Joy Randolph ("The Holdovers") is the front-runner in a field that includes Emily Blunt ("Oppenheimer"), Danielle Brooks ("The Color Purple"), Penélope Cruz (“Ferrari”) and Jodie Foster ("Nyad").
Who has won the most SAG Awards?
If you're curious which actors have been rewarded the most by their peers, we've got you covered. According to the Screen Actors Guild, Julia Louis-Dreyfus leads that illustrious list. She has won nine best actor awards, including five individual awards and four ensemble awards for her work on both "Veep" and "Seinfeld."
Who's been nominated the most? That would be Edie Falco, with 22 total nods for individual and ensemble work largely for "The Sopranos" and also "Nurse Jackie." She's won five times, all for "The Sopranos."
